Description of Work
Medical assistants perform a variety of administrative and clinical
functions in doctors’ offices. They have a wide variety of
duties including: scheduling and receiving patients, obtaining basic
data; maintaining medical records, handling Telephone calls, correspondence,
reports, etc. ; purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment;
and assuming responsibility for insurance matters, office accounts,
fees and collections, and office care. As a clinical assistant,
the medical assistant’s responsibilities may include preparing
patients for examination or treatment, taking temperatures, measuring
height and weight, sterilizing instruments, and assisting the physician
as he examines or treats patients. Medical assistants may also perform
routine laboratory and diagnostic tests. The ability to perform
clinical tasks under the supervision of a physician distinguishes
the medical assistant from the medical secretary.

Important personal qualities are adaptability, kindness, physical
stamina, a positive attitude, discretion, good judgment, neatness
and accuracy.
